Identifying Reactive Patterns of Behavior

Identify Reactive Patterns of Behavior

Today, let's identify the reactive patterns of behavior that operate in our life.

INTENTION

Today, let's identify the reactive patterns of behavior that operate in our life.

A pattern of behavior is a sequence of triggered reactions that operate automatically. Reactive patterns initially form as a protective mechanism in response to an experience that is overbearing. They pattern themselves into our being and, if left unhealed, they will continue to recreate the conditions that trigger the patterns. Fortunately, there are simple ways to observe these patterns and release their fearful grip.

REFLECTION

We naturally release reactive patterns by simply observing them.

As we observe reactive patterns, we see how they can usually be expressed in the form of “I want this, I don't want that.” For example, “I want to be productive, I don't want to waste time.” Or, “I want to avoid suffering, I want to feel good.” As we see our own reactive patterns from this “higher” perspective, we can begin to identify the various components of the reactions and the ways they interact to establish their patterned behavior.

LET'S PRACTICE

Here's a “simple” method to cut reactive patterns with attention:

  1. Choose a reactive pattern of behavior that causes difficulty in your life.
  2. Observe the pattern as you imagine behaving differently.
  3. Notice the sensations that arise in your body.
  4. Notice the emotions that you feel.
  5. Notice what thoughts distract you from holding your attention to the pattern.
  6. Return to observing the pattern of behavior while remaining relaxed and present.

As a reactive pattern is identified, we can clearly see how our physical, emotional, and intellectual reactions reinforce patterns of behavior. Once we are aware of the reactions that reinforce the patterns, we can free our Self by consciously choosing to respond more mindfully. It's a “simple” practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice,
